Finding student accommodation in Galway is genuinely difficult right now. Waiting lists are long, leases want 12-month commitments, and landlords ask for guarantors, references, and proof of income before you have even started your course.
If you just need somewhere sorted quickly, or a base while you figure out something longer-term, The Dawson Hostel is worth knowing about.
We are not a student village or a letting agency. We are a city-centre hostel a 10-minute walk from NUIG (the University of Galway) and close to ATU Galway, with flexible weekly rates, free breakfast, a self-catering kitchen, and no utility bills, lease paperwork, or long-term commitment.
Our Short-stay student accommodation in Galway city centre is available from September to April, Sunday to Thursday only.
This is not the right place for a 12-month lease. But if any of the following sounds like your situation, it probably makes a lot of sense.
Arriving before your accommodation is confirmed happens more than you'd expect. NUIG student villages are oversubscribed, paperwork gets delayed. Base yourself here while you sort things out.
If you're commuting from outside Galway, a few nights in a central hostel - 10 minutes from NUIG, short bus from ATU - is significantly less stressful than early morning travel.
Healthcare, teaching, and engineering placements often bring people into Galway on a recurring basis. Weekly rates make this manageable without the overhead of a lease.
Available September to April only. Sunday to Thursday nights only. Minimum stay of 4 to 5 nights. Valid student ID from a Galway university required at check-in. Rooms fill fast around exam periods -- if you have dates in mind, book early.
Our short-term student accommodation in Galway city centre offers flexible, short-term stays with no hidden costs, just clean, central, hassle-free living.
The Dawson Hostel Galway is located in Galway city centre, putting you within easy walking distance of both NUIG and ATU campuses. This makes it one of the most convenient options for student accommodation in Galway.
University of Galway (NUIG)
Approximately a 10-minute walk from the hostel, with a straightforward route via Dominick Street and the Salmon Weir Bridge. It is an easy, scenic walk along the River Corrib.
ATU Galway
The Dublin Road campus is around 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the city centre, or a short Bus Éireann journey from Eyre Square, just a 5-minute walk from the hostel. Regular city buses connect both campuses.
Getting to Galway
Ceannt Station at Eyre Square, Galway’s main bus and train station, is a 5-minute walk from the hostel. Direct trains from Dublin Heuston take around 2 hours 15 minutes, and Bus Éireann connects Galway to towns across Ireland. From the station, the walk to the hostel is short and flat.
Shop Street, Eyre Square, and Galway city centre are right on your doorstep, with supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and restaurants all within a few minutes’ walk. Galway is compact, safe, and easy to get around on foot.
If you are arriving from outside Ireland or moving to Galway for the first time, it helps to know what you are coming to.
Galway is a small city (population around 80,000) with a student population that punches well above its weight. Between NUIG (University of Galway) and ATU, there are roughly 25,000 students in the city during term time. It has a very active social scene, a strong music and arts culture, and the kind of compact city centre where you run into people constantly.
Shop Street is the main pedestrianised thoroughfare. Salthill, the seaside suburb about 20 minutes on foot from the centre, is worth knowing about early on. The Claddagh and the Spanish Arch area along the River Corrib are popular spots, and the Saturday market at St. Nicholas’ Church on Market Street is a Galway staple.
The city is easy to navigate without a car. The cost of living is high relative to other Irish cities outside Dublin, so having a self-catering setup and keeping accommodation costs down matters more here than it might elsewhere. At the Dawson Hostel, Student-only dorm rates from €30 a night keep things manageable.
Accommodation in Galway is competitive year-round. The well-documented housing shortage is why short-term options like The Dawson Hostel fill up quickly during peak periods – Freshers Week in October, Rag Week in February, exams in April and May. Book early.
Galway is a small city with a lot competing for the same beds: students, tourists, festival crowds, rugby weekends, and conference visitors. Beds fill up faster than you would expect, particularly around October, February, and the April and May exam periods.
